Dan Brown: plagiario o punk? - Riflessione scherzosa durante una pausa caffè

Anni fa, quando ero ancora una giovane e innocente universitaria, lavoricchiavo per un pubblicitario, creatore (diceva lui) dello slogan: "Ibis è la mortadella". Il pubblicitario in questione aveva preso l'abitudine di gridare "Che plagio!" ogni volta che il verbo essere alla terza persona singolare veniva usato da altri in payoff e slogan vari.

Me ne sono ricordata oggi leggendo un articolo su Dan Brown accusato di plagio. Ma il cosiddetto plagiarism per alcuni scrittori è un metodo creativo. Basti pensare all'incredibile self-confessed plagiarist Kathy Acker, esponente del movimento punk degli anni Ottanta e autrice dell'ottimo In Memoriam to Identity (sconsigliato ai deboli di stomaco, di cuore e d'animo):

Plagiarism is a touchy word among writers, but Kathy's whole art was based on the idea of plagiarism -- the appropriation and reworking of existing texts. It certainly wasn't anything she did secretly. She talked openly about appropriation as a way of putting existing texts into a new context, revealing subtle meanings that were inherent, but hidden, in the original.

Questa, a mio modestro parere, dovrebbe essere la difesa del povero Dan Brown. Del resto, come definire altrimenti uno scrittore che ha il coraggio di iniziare il proprio libro con la parola Renowned?

Vetri sporchi

In casa del Taccuino il giornale del lunedì non lo si legge, ma lo si usa, pagina dopo pagina, per pulire i vetri, come facevano una volta le nonne.
Oggi invece abbiamo salvato un articolo pubblicato a pagina 3, in cui si parla del Red Book of Endangered Languages, un sito dell'UNESCO che, nonostante sia online dal dicembre 2002, fino a oggi ha attirato ben pochi visitatori.
Il sito divide le lingue in diverse categorie: estinte, quasi estinte, in grave pericolo d'estinzione, possibilmente in via d'estinzione ecc... Si parla di lingue come gwich'in, defaka e wymysojer, parlate in Alaska, Nigeria sud-occidentale e Polonia, ma anche di Italkian, Italiot Greek e Algherese Catalano.

Piccola curiosità: chi parla olandese, parla anche un po' di wymysojer.

Autobiografia linguistica

Su Tuttolibri di oggi c'è una recensione dedicata all'ultimo libro di Tullio De Mauro, Parole di giorni lontani.

Ora, lo studioso e storico della lingua che tanto ha contribuito all'educazione linguistica degli italiani, si cimenta per la prima volta con un testo di carattere narrativo, in cui si racconta la scoperta delle parole, nel tempo dell'infanzia, e come esse si imprimano nella mente perché legate a persone, luoghi, fatterelli, aneddoti.

Un testamento

The last will and testament

Ikkyu, a famous Zen teacher of the Ashikaga era, was the son of the emperor. When he was very young, his mother left the palace and went to study Zen in a temple. In this way Prince Ikkyu also became a student. When this mother passed on, she left him a letter. It read:

To Ikkyu:

I have finished my work in this life and am now returning into Eternity. I wish you to become a good student and to realize your Buddha-nature. You will know if I am in hell and whether I am always with you or not.

If you become a man who realizes that the Buddha and his follower Bodhidharma are your own servants, you may leave off studying and work for humanity. The Buddha preached for forty-nine years and in all that time found it not necessary to speak one word. You ought to know why. But if you don't and yet wish to, avoid thinking fruitlessly.

Your Mother,

Not born, not dead.

P.S. The teaching of Buddha was mainly for the purpose of enlightening others. If you are dependent on any of its methods, you are naught but an ignorant insect. There are 80,000 books on Buddhism and if you should read all of them and still not see your own nature, you will not understand even this letter. This is my will and testament.

Mi sono sempre domandata chi fosse la bravissima autrice dei numerosi articoli sulla lingua russa pubblicati dal Moscow Times. Per caso oggi ho trovato quest'intervista con Michele A. Berdy, insieme a un suo divertentissimo articolo, The Grass is Greener.

Se non usiamo il congiuntivo, non è perché siamo somari, ma perché siamo stressati.

Dice Repubblica: I FRANCESI l'hanno abolito e campano bene lo stesso. Noi, il congiuntivo ci limitiamo a bistrattarlo ma forse il giorno della sua scomparsa è dietro l'angolo.

Malintesi culturali?

From a Western perspective, some Korean novels are intriguing due to the exotic atmosphere of a far eastern country, but others may be overtly sentimental and often plagued by "incidents and attitudes of questionable political correctness," [...] For example, to most Korean readers who are used to lyric poems and melodramatic pop songs, sentimentalism is allowed to a certain extent. On the contrary, in Western literature sentimentalism is so unfashionable that it is only found in the lowest kind of dime novels and pulp fiction.

Western publishers may also find that Korean protagonists, aside from being emotionally vulnerable, are too dependent on others, seriously lacking the qualities of stoicism and self-reliance that mark their Western counterparts. They may suspect that even a female Korean protagonist's search for her mother may be an evidence of her weakness and feminine dependence that Western cultural values do not appreciate.

But they may be wrong. In fact, a Korean protagonist's quest for her mother may not be taken as a sign of her weak or dependent personality, but rather as a symptom of her relentless search for her roots and identity. Moreover, the protagonist's search for her mother needs to be understood in the context of the especially close relationship between Korean children and their mother, which is extremely endearing and inspiring.
