Manifesto degli espatriati

1. I live here because I want to. Just because I could be paid better for the same job back home does not give me the right to complain about it. In fact, just because anything at all is different here, I do not have the right to be rude about those whose country it really is (”the locals”).

2. Having infinite patience means it goes on forever, or, no matter how long those effing Spaniards (insert other expletive/nationality as appropriate) take to process a form or fix the plumbing, I’m the only one that cares if I loose my patience.

3. Even if I am conned, robbed, humiliated, lonely or homesick, it is worth remembering afterwards that I decided to step out of my comfort zone in the first place.

4. It really doesn’t matter if I hang out with the locals or with other ex-pats, as long as I am happy…

5. But those who continually complain about their new surroundings are to be avoided. It’s contagious.

6. Wow, everything is… new… it’s not the same as where I came from! What a chance to stimulate my senses! I will take photographs, maybe write a blog or keep a diary, produce podcasts, videos - I’m enjoying the fact that my new point of view is necessarily different, I’m revelling in these new opportunities to feel creative!

Fascino latino.

It is a thoroughly unlikely publishing phenomenon. A book about Latin - that is, about how to learn Latin, with dozens of verb tables and explanations of the ablative absolute and the gerundive - has crept up, unexpectedly but persistently, as high as number 14 in the Amazon bestseller list in the all-important weeks before Christmas. It is possible that the British reading public are labouring under an almighty illusion, since Amo, Amas, Amat ... and All That: How to Become a Latin Lover might reasonably be supposed to be a volume dispensing Roman sex tips (which would be a pretty racy read). But that must just be me, for a glance at the relevant Amazon page shows that "customers who bought this item also bought Revised Latin Primer by BH Kennedy" (ghastly bane of posh English schoolchildren since, quite possibly, the defeat of Boudicca).

                CORSO di TRADUZIONE LETTERARIA

Gennaio 2007 – Marzo 2007

Il Centro di poesia contemporanea dell’Università degli Studi di Bologna organizza per il gennaio 2007 un corso di traduzione letteraria articolato in laboratori di traduzione e incontri con studiosi e teorici della traduzione e della letteratura. Vi è sempre una più insistente richiesta, da parte degli editori, di figure professionali in grado di tradurre, curare, revisionare un testo in programma editoriale prima della sua uscita in libreria; di un professionista, insomma, in grado di promuovere se stesso in un panorama lavorativo fondato sulla collaborazione free-lance. Quella del traduttore letterario è una professione ad alto livello di specializzazione che assomma mestiere e arte; per questo al seminario collaborano:

 -il mondo accademico, con il suo apporto teorico, attraverso le lezioni di docenti universitari, le conferenze di studiosi e teorici della traduzione e della letteratura

 -il mondo professionale, grazie a laboratori guidati da traduttori di provata esperienza.

 
Struttura del corso

I Laboratori, di 20 ore per ciascuna lingua, verteranno sulla traduzione di testi di narrativa e poesia dall’inglese, francese, tedesco, spagnolo, russo. Nel loro ambito i corsisti affronteranno l’analisi e la traduzione di testi di varia tipologia, per misurarsi con stili e generi letterari differenti. Verranno messe a confronto le possibili traduzioni di un testo, controllando i criteri di analisi adottati e la coerenza delle scelte traduttive operate.

Gli Incontri  (10 ore in totale) con scrittori, studiosi e rappresentanti del mondo editoriale si propongono di essere un momento di riflessione e approfondimento dei temi legati alla traduzione e avranno forma di conversazione tra due o più figure del mondo della traduzione.

 
Informazioni

Il corso è rivolto a laureati o laureandi di facoltà umanistiche o di Scuole Superiori per Interpreti e Traduttori, ed è vincolato al superamento di una prova di ammissione consistente nella traduzione di un brano di narrativa da una delle lingue in programma.

Per partecipare è necessario inviare una domanda di ammissione (via mail) contenente i propri dati anagrafici e indirizzo e-mail, il tipo di Laurea o Diploma in possesso all’indirizzo e-mail: semtraduzionibo[chiocciola]tiscali.it 
Il corso è strutturato per una frequenza di 2 laboratori. Specificando nella domanda la lingua a cui si è interessati, vi verrà inviata una sola prova di traduzione per l’ammissione al corso. La prova di traduzione viene inviata via e-mail. Tempo di consegna della prova: 3 giorni.

Le lezioni si terranno presso il Centro di Poesia Contemporanea, via Delle Belle Arti 42, 40126 Bologna, il giovedì e venerdì dalle 10.00 alle 18 . Costo del corso euro 750.

Verrà rilasciato un attestato di frequenza.

L’inizio del corso verrà pubblicato sul sito del Centro di Poesia Contemporanea dell’Università degli Studi di Bologna.

Qualcosa di diverso

Metto da parte per un momento la traduzione, le lingue e i principi grammaticali.

Pankaj Mishra, che mi aveva conquistato con la vita del Budda (An End to Suffering: The Buddha in the World) e che ora mi tiene in pugno con il suo ultimo libro Temptations of the West: How to be Modern in India, Tibet and Beyond, racconta la sua visita a Shanghai.

Today beggars approach you discreetly on the Bund, Shanghai’s embanked riverfront, whose grand buildings once housed the banks, trading houses and diplomatic missions of China’s foreign overlords. The destitute are more invisible now, but it’s easy enough to make out the visitors from the impoverished countryside, in their faded blue Mao jackets and dusty shoes, gazing at the super-malls on Nanjing Lu and the throbbing neon lights of Pudong. The novelist Wang Anyi, sitting in the lobby of my hotel in one of the kitsch towers of Pudong, said: ‘There is no culture here!’ I’m not sure culture is what’s wanted in this sleek new part of the city, built in less than a decade on the once desolate mudflats across the river from the Bund, and designed to symbolise the wealth and power of a globalising China. Postmodern skyscrapers dwarf the Bund’s domes and clock towers, which were once a reassuring sight to taipans and straw-hatted tourists arriving from Europe. Gleaming new industrial parks – with landscaped gardens – sprawl across the suburbs. Shanghai has regained its role as the engine of the Chinese economy and the premier city of Asian capitalism.

Sulla poesia

Un bellissimo articolo di Adrienne Rich sull'arte e la necessità della poesia.

I'm both a poet and one of the "everybodies" of my country. I live with manipulated fear, ignorance, cultural confusion and social antagonism huddling together on the faultline of an empire. I hope never to idealise poetry - it has suffered enough from that. Poetry is not a healing lotion, an emotional massage, a kind of linguistic aromatherapy. Neither is it a blueprint, nor an instruction manual, nor a billboard. There is no universal Poetry, anyway, only poetries and poetics, and the streaming, intertwining histories to which they belong. There is room, indeed necessity, for both Neruda and César Valléjo, for Pier Paolo Pasolini and Alfonsina Storni, for both Ezra Pound and Nelly Sachs. Poetries are no more pure and simple than human histories are pure and simple. And there are colonised poetics and resilient poetics, transmissions across frontiers not easily traced.

Poetry has been written-off on other counts: it's not a mass-market "product", it doesn't get sold on airport newsstands or in supermarket aisles; it's too "difficult" for the average mind; it's too elite, but the wealthy don't bid for it at Sotheby's; it is, in short, redundant. This might be called the free-market critique of poetry.


Nella metropolitana di Parigi, qua e là si trovano poesie sparse. Questa l'ho trovata lungo la linea che scorre in direzione Porte de Clignancourt.

Quel étranger ici ne se sent pas chez lui?

Solo 5 libri in poco più di 40 anni...

Ma finalmente fra pochi giorni dovrebbe uscire la sesta opera di Thomas Pynchon, e nonostante quello che scrive Michiko Kakutani nel NY Times, Against the Day è da oggi nella mia reading list.

A questo autore più schivo di J.D. Salinger lo scrittore Ian Rankin dedica un articolo che trasuda ammirazione.
