My 1981 Macquarie Dictionary confirms that "trouser" is an adjective, as in trouser-leg. The things that you wear are trousers. The same with "pant". I pant if I run up the stairs. You definitely don't wear a pant, you wear pants.
This list goes on. In addition to their "cotton pinstripe pant", an upmarket fashion house like Armani will kit you out in a "piped swim trunk", or an "ikat patch cargo short". As far as I am aware, a trunk has always been an elephant's appendage or a suitcase. Both are difficult to swim in. Short is merely the description of clothing length, not the article of clothing itself.
Reject the short, the pant and hold on to your undies
