Appunti in vacanza

Ricordarsi di non volare mai più con Alitalia.

Efficiency in Progress: lo dichiara un cartello vicino a una scala mobile sventrata.

"I peperoni non si ripropongono": afferma con autorità una signora a Montefiascone.

Ristoranti con trattamento famigliare (o familiare): non ho avuto il coraggio di entrarci. L'idea di essere sgridata per aver lasciato il piatto a metà o di ricevere delle pacche sulla spalla da un perfetto sconosciuto non mi attira.

Ho incontrato per la prima volta un dissuasore di traffico a scomparsa.

"Hai una logica oscena",  grida una ragazzina che ha appena ricevuto in regalo un tanga dall'amichetta.

Una cubista non è un'artista che dipinge alla Picasso, ma una ragazza che in abiti discinti balla su un cubo luminoso di una discoteca.

Al'ingresso del Parco dei Mostri di Bomarzo, un cartello annuncia: "State per vedere un luogo storico-culturale unico al mondo". Mia aggiunta: "E naturalmente è severamente vietato scattare foto delle statue. Se vi vediamo con una macchina fotografica, vi spariamo a vista come a un daino. Potrete invece comprare le nostre bruttissime cartoline con una forte dominante verde."

In Toscana e in Umbria gli Internet Point sono una cosa molto rara. Se ne trovate uno, fermatevi. Ma, mentre a Hong Kong, soggetto a un regime totalitario, basta acquistare un muffin per poter usare un computer per ben 20 minuti, in Italia si deve presentare un documento d'identità (che viene debitamente fotocopiato), si è tenuti a indicare quali siti si vogliono visitare, e si devono tenere tutte e due le mani sulla tastiera.

A Roma, due bottigliette di Estathé costavano 5 euro il lunedì e 6 il martedì. Mercoledì me ne sono andata.

All'estero

Guardian Abroad raccoglie le esperienze non turistiche dei propri lettori in altri Paesi. Fra questi la storia di un traduttore, Nik Boini, in Italia:

In a room overlooking the gardens of the Olivetti Staff Training Centre in a renaissance villa on a hill north of Florence sits a 21-year-old English translator who has been working here scarcely a week. The MS* cigarette between his fingers, the drained espresso cup and open green glass half-litre bottle of Cerelia sparkling mineral water proclaim his desire to fit in as much as the length and style of his hair and crushed velvet suit prevent it. He stares at the sentence against which nicotine, caffeine, A-Level Italian and patchy university attendance are of little use: "Il personale dovrà essere raggiunto da un intervento formativo."

He considers the literal rendering: "The personnel will have to be reached by a formative intervention". He imagines his grandmother's scorn: "What's a bleedin' formative intervention when it's out?" He imagines the quiet of the villa gardens shattered by gunfire as shock troops burst into the building and round up the occupants, herding them outside as a military jeep careers through the gates.

Viaggi personali

Il NY Times pubblica alcuni consigli su libri di viaggio che descrivono soprattutto le esperienze personali degli autori.

Peccato che non menzioni i due bellissimi libri della canadese Karen Connelly: Touch the Dragon (sul suo soggiorno in Tailandia) e One Room in a Castle.

PS. E mi accorgo solo adesso di averli già menzionati.

Manifesto degli espatriati

1. I live here because I want to. Just because I could be paid better for the same job back home does not give me the right to complain about it. In fact, just because anything at all is different here, I do not have the right to be rude about those whose country it really is (”the locals”).

2. Having infinite patience means it goes on forever, or, no matter how long those effing Spaniards (insert other expletive/nationality as appropriate) take to process a form or fix the plumbing, I’m the only one that cares if I loose my patience.

3. Even if I am conned, robbed, humiliated, lonely or homesick, it is worth remembering afterwards that I decided to step out of my comfort zone in the first place.

4. It really doesn’t matter if I hang out with the locals or with other ex-pats, as long as I am happy…

5. But those who continually complain about their new surroundings are to be avoided. It’s contagious.

6. Wow, everything is… new… it’s not the same as where I came from! What a chance to stimulate my senses! I will take photographs, maybe write a blog or keep a diary, produce podcasts, videos - I’m enjoying the fact that my new point of view is necessarily different, I’m revelling in these new opportunities to feel creative!

Qualcosa di diverso

Metto da parte per un momento la traduzione, le lingue e i principi grammaticali.

Pankaj Mishra, che mi aveva conquistato con la vita del Budda (An End to Suffering: The Buddha in the World) e che ora mi tiene in pugno con il suo ultimo libro Temptations of the West: How to be Modern in India, Tibet and Beyond, racconta la sua visita a Shanghai.

Today beggars approach you discreetly on the Bund, Shanghai’s embanked riverfront, whose grand buildings once housed the banks, trading houses and diplomatic missions of China’s foreign overlords. The destitute are more invisible now, but it’s easy enough to make out the visitors from the impoverished countryside, in their faded blue Mao jackets and dusty shoes, gazing at the super-malls on Nanjing Lu and the throbbing neon lights of Pudong. The novelist Wang Anyi, sitting in the lobby of my hotel in one of the kitsch towers of Pudong, said: ‘There is no culture here!’ I’m not sure culture is what’s wanted in this sleek new part of the city, built in less than a decade on the once desolate mudflats across the river from the Bund, and designed to symbolise the wealth and power of a globalising China. Postmodern skyscrapers dwarf the Bund’s domes and clock towers, which were once a reassuring sight to taipans and straw-hatted tourists arriving from Europe. Gleaming new industrial parks – with landscaped gardens – sprawl across the suburbs. Shanghai has regained its role as the engine of the Chinese economy and the premier city of Asian capitalism.
